Standard and Competent Authority Pathway

Now you have confirmed that you have a medical qualification that is approved for medical practice in Australia, you will need to be accepted on one of the following assessment pathways:

  • Competent Authority Pathway  

  • Standard Pathway  

   

The pathway is designed to assesses your knowledge and clinical skills to qualify for medical registration in Australia.  

There are two pathways for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to work as General Practitioners in Australia: (1) the Competent Authority Pathway; or (2) the Standard Pathway.

Competent Authority Pathway

You may be eligible for the Competent Authority Pathway if you have completed an assessment for medical registration with the:

  • General Medical Council (United Kingdom - for the PLAB examination or for graduates of GMC-accredited medical courses in the United Kingdom)  

  • Medical Council of Canada (LMCC)  

  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates of the United States (USMLE)  

  • Medical Council of New Zealand (NZREX)  

  • Medical Council of Ireland (graduates of medical courses in Ireland accredited by the Medical Council of Ireland). 

  • National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (COMLEX-USA).

Standard Pathway

The Standard Pathway is for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) seeking general registration as a medical practitioner in Australia. It involves completion of a written examination (CAT MCQ) and structured clinical examination of the Australian Medical Council (AMC) or approved workplace based assessment program.
